‘Do you care about owning original art?’
The big question that artists are currently asking. With the cost of living increasing and people having less disposable income to spend on luxury items, do you need original artwork in your home?
Working in a gallery has made me notice an incline of sales in digital prints and a decline in original artwork selling. I spent a huge amount of time on each nude fruit piece, painting on my weekends off and afterwork in the evenings to perfect each one. Being able to then make prints of the work felt more benfical with limited time to create new work as often as I would like. I also had the mindset that I would rather more people were able to enjoy my paintings that I love so much than have one person who gets to enjoy my work in their home. I do appreciate however that being the only one to own that artwork may seem like a important factor to people buying art, so making prints may defer few from buying the original.
When I launched my first drop of nude fruit artwork I knew I would make prints of the work as I had a lot of friends and family who had seen the work and asked to buy it. This being said, I also wanted to test run painting the same pieces 6 times knowing that all of them would look slightly different in their own way. This way people were able to purchase a ‘Mini Original Juicy Pear’ that would be unique to all the others but at a more affordable price because they are teeny tiny!
So far I am not convinced on a definite answer. So for now I want to continue painting original pieces, sharing them with you and ultimately letting you decide whether I make prints or originals.
So the question is, do you care?
